Here’s the more personal version

Why did you start DrAxe.com?
A few years ago I had patients asking me daily health questions for their friends or family all across America. More and more people like Jenny would ask me for similar advice, “Dr. Axe, my mom lives in Utah and really needs to lose weight and get her blood sugar under control, I wish she could come see you and do you have any advice?”

This was the inspiration for my site- giving people like Jenny a way to easily share health advice. So, I started posting my health advice online and that’s how DrAxe.com got started.

From day one, I wanted to create the best health content in the world that ALL people would have access to. And people need it now more than ever! Diabetes has tripled in the past ten years and obesity is at an all-time high at 36%. If we don’t do something about it, kids are going to keep losing their parents, or worse- parents are going to start out living their kids due to poor health. I’m not OK with that.

Tell me about your family
I’m married to my beautiful wife Chelsea who is also a health nut:)  She’s my best friend and pushes me to grow in all areas of life and she makes the best healthy gluten-free blueberry cobbler in the world! If you want to learn more about her and what she’s up to, visit her site.

I have a brother and sister, my dad’s 62 years old and a semi-pro water skier, my mom is now 59 and has incredible health after overcoming 2 bouts with cancer.

Seventeen years ago my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a crazy reality for my family at the time because she was a gym teacher, swim instructor and an active mom who looked healthy. How could someone so active end up with cancer at age 40? I was thirteen years old and remember asking myself this question, but having no answer.

She went through all the traditional medical treatments. I still remember watching her hair fall out and thinking she had aged 20 years in two weeks after going through her chemo treatments.  She pressed on though, like so many do today, and after battling for months she was diagnosed as cancer free and “healthy”.

Sadly, even though she was diagnosed as being healthy after her treatments, she was sicker than ever. My mom struggled with chronic fatigue, depression, constipation and was sick all the time. She continued to have these problems for another ten years until one day I received a call from her. She’d just been told by her doctor that they found a 2.5 cm mass on her lungs, and from the scan, they believed it was cancer. They were recommending surgery and radiation, but this time she wanted to do something more natural.

My Mom and Dad at the 5k

She wanted to try a new approach—the same approach I’d been using to get thousands of people well from all kinds of chronic diseases. This all-natural approach using diet, nutrition, detoxification, peace building and spinal correction allowed her body to heal from within. My mom is now in complete remission and currently in the best shape of her life. She actually just raced her first 5K last year and finished second in her age group at 58 years old! Watch her testimony here.

What’s your health philosophy?

In a nutshell:

  1. Eat Real Food (fresh, organic, and unprocessed)
  2. Be Active Daily (Burst is best. Exercise outdoors or indoors, just be active)
  3. Drink lots clean water
  4. Sleep 7+ hours a night
  5. Schedule Fun time weekly, take vacations, and REST 1 day a week
  6. Take just a few whole-food based supplements
  7. Build relationships with God and Family
  8. Set Goals and follow thru

What’s your favorite food? (view all my recipes, here)
You want me to pick just one? I don’t know if I can do that…How about I give you 3 of my favorites? OK, here goes:

Breakfast: Blueberry Pumpkin Pancakes
Lunch: Superfood Salad
Dinner: Healthy Chicken Parmesan

Oh, and 1 more, here’s one of my favorite healthy desserts…
Dessert: Avocado Chocolate Mousse (that’s right, avocado).

Do you ever have a cheat meal?
That depends on what you mean. Have I had a piece of pizza from an actual restaurant in the past 8 years… No. Do I make my own gluten-free homemade pizza and my own chocolate cheesecake… Absolutely.

I don’t “cheat” anymore because really, I don’t want to. I crave healthy food now, and not junk food. But it has been a slow process to get to this point. My first health commitment was at 14, when I decided to stop drinking soda. I didn’t know a lot about health at the time but I knew soda was bad, so that was my first change. Was it still up and down after that and did I fall off the wagon and have a soda again, yes. But health is a journey, not a destination.

What are your political and religious beliefs?
Politics drive me a bit crazy, so I’m not too political.  I’m a follower of Jesus Christ and his love for me drives my life.  “Whether you eat, drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31

Where’s your favorite place to vacation?
Hands down, Seaside Florida, it’s where my wife and I were married. When we visit we get a cottage on the beach, do a beach workout in the mornings then go to our favorite local restaurant, Raw and Juicy, where we get fruit smoothies and grainless granola. Then we hit the beach all day swimming, playing volleyball, and reading. Talk about reducing stress!

What do you do for fun?
I LOVE the water!  I grew up water skiing, swimming and now spend time in the summer wakeboarding.  I also love spending time with my close friends playing games and eating great food!

My personal goal is to see people’s lives transformed. I believe the more people are educated—through as many ways as possible—the greater chance they have of getting and staying healthy. Reducing stress, doing the right kinds of exercises, having a mission in your life and eating real foods are some of the keys to outstanding health.

Blessings,

Dr. Axe
