Soy has been touted as a health food, but other health professionals tell you to stay away. Dr. Axe clears up the soy controversy by explaining what forms of soy you should eat and what forms you should avoid.
Soy to Eat & Soy to Avoid-Episode #023

Awesome! Thanks.
This knowledge was not available when I raised my daughter. I had her on soy formula from 5 months till just after a year old. I worry what effect their may be on her because of it. She came through puberty at an appropriate age and I’ve not seen signs of anything unusual, although she’s recently been put on Armour because her Reverse 3-T levels were off. Could there be any relation? Also, her doctor tested and told us her adrenals were low. Related?
Yes, it could effect your adrenal glands. At this point focus on eating a lot of raw vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, and organic meats. Also, sometimes doing kelp or organic iodine can help thyroid function. Vitamin B5 and Vitamin C help adrenal function.
I get this question all the time and I loved your clarification of what to stay away from and what to incorporate. Would you consider it safe to also have edamame and soy nuts, or are they genetically modified?
I just watched your video on Soy products. I am 68 years old and have just in the last few months discovered I am lactose intolerant. I have switched heavily to soy products. I have bought a lot of the Westsoy which you were showing not to buy. So . . I do like Almond milk also but what about Rice milk? Also . . what is your opinion of Soy Protein powders? Oh, and I’ve also been buying Soy Yogurts , , opinion?
I would stay away from Soy milk, soy yogurt, and soy protein. All processed soy products are unhealthy.
Dr. Josh, what about products that are “meat” replacements(burgers, “chikn”, etc. I don’t eat meat(except for eggs, and almost always use the meat replacer type products when craving protein. I don’t use them more than 1 to 2 times per week, but do use them. Also, what if they are labeled “non-gmo”, in your opinion, would these be o.k.? Thanks, Miss Yna
Is organic tofu OK to eat? Is there such a thing?
Also, what about edamame?
Rather than tofu I would do some of the other fermented soy foods. Edamame should be OK as long as it is organic, non-gmo.
I wonder if soy lecithyn (sp?) is bad and should be avoided, also soy oil as an ingredient in baked goods.
Soy oil should probably be avoided but soy lecithin can be OK depending on the form.
Does the soy fermenting process erase the negative effects of GMO soy or are these fermented products only made from strictly non-GMO soybeans?
Fermenting Soy does not negate the side effects if it’s GMO. I would recommend staying away from any and all GMO foods.
To Soy or not to Soy Oh my
To Soy or not to Soy oh my!
He didn’t say anything about organic soy products. Does that make a difference?
Organic soy products typically mean that they are non-GMO, but still if they are processed they aren’t good. Example: organic Soy Milk – is still not safe.
I been a vegan for 14 weeks and soy milk has only been in my diet for breakfast. besides almond milk and coconut and hemp is rice milk ok?
Hi Robert, I’ve been vegan for 3 and a half years, and soy is a huge part of my diet. I buy organic, but in restaurants and coffee shops I don’t know what they use. I feel fine but who knows? My sister-in-law tells me that there are brands of soy that state “non-GMO” on the package, so from now on I’ll read labels even more carefully.
This is true I know that silk and a few other brands have no gmo’s but based on the video I saw that all processed soy is bad and possible cancer causing I wanna know is rice milk ok to drink or is that just as bad as soy milk and tofu
No, rice milk is not as bad as soy milk, but I still prefer coconut milk and almond milk.
I am so confused, I am currently buying Silk Coconut and Almond milk for my 4 kids and am on a serious budget. I get tons of WIC milk and it’s very disturbing what they define as “healthy nutrition” for children under five, Everything they give is terribly for them, especially considering they don’t let you buy organic, only fruits. I have a 12month old and 2 1/2 year old whom I am trying to wean off milk, and need to find an alternative. They do like drinking juiced carrotts, kale and apples. But a form of milk has always been a staple especially for older boys who love cereal. We are slowly transitioning the processed stuff out of the house and trying eating all real foods. No easy task!
What about vegetarians? I am vegetarian, and am raising my daughter that way. What so is safe? We sometimes eat products by Boca, and Yves… She has a nut allergy so we have to avoid nuts as a source of protein. She was thought at one point to have an allergy to milk as well, so we were on soy milk for a short period of time until it was found otherwise…
Great video on soy and clearing up any confusion. Thank You! Can you provide/guide me to a good source for information on IRREGULAR HEARTBEAT? My 24 year old son was told that he has an irrregular heartbeat and may want to see a cardiologist. I was told I had an irregular heartbeat 30 years ago and later told that my heartbeat was NOT irregular. This has us conerned. Thank you for any guidance and advice, Blessings, Anne
My new granddaughter had problems with formula and we went to an organic soy formula we purchased at Whole Foods by Earth’s Best Organic. Is this not good for her either?
Could you please give me information on the other alternatives you mentioned in this video. One thing is that my daughter will not use raw cows milk – she is afraid of that and I don’t want to push her into anything.
Hi Dr. Axe,
What can a person who is trying to go vegetarian/vegan eat in place of protein? Instead of eating meat- what can be a safe replacer?
I was looking into http://www.vegecyber.com/ for meat replacers but I see that they’re mostly made from soy protein.
Thank you for your help.
I’m well aware of the dangers of soy and try to avoid eating it whenever possible. I’m wondering, though, about soy candles. Is there any adverse effects of burning them? I want to switch out my harmful paraffin candles but want to make sure I’m switching to something that is safe. Thanks for your help!
I have always been told that vitimin K helps coagulation, is K2 different ?
My kids are 8 and 6 – one boy and one girl. They have been on soymilk – non-gmo since birth. I would love to wean them off but I don’t know what to replace it with….nut milks have no protein. We are vegetarians. I would consider cows milk but I’ve heard that it is bad for your health, as well. Added hormones, etc. Help please. My kids eat healthy but the soy thing has me freaked out!
