Did you know that running shoes torque your knee more than high heeled shoes? Barefoot running has been gaining popularity recently. Have you jumped on the barefoot bandwagon? Maybe you’re just curious about my Five Finger shoes and want to learn more!
Go Barefoot or Go Home-Episode #016

Is there any benefit to just wearing them for power walking or even just wearing them around the house. I was always under the impression that wearing shoes through the day gives proper support for the arches. I was also told that if you don’t wear shoes your arches will fall in. I usually wear my shoes from the morning shower till I go to bed at night.
I would say that walking barefoot will actually strengthen your arches. I think wearing vibrams or barefoot is a great idea for powerwalking. I would start off light and ease your way into it. I don’t run barefoot on pavement but do run barefoot on tracks, grass, and on trails wearing my vibrams.
what is you have posterior tibial dysfunciton and have been told to never go barefoot
by a podiatrist?
If you have an actual structural problem it may be a different case, but what caused your problem in the first place? Maybe your tibial dysfunction is from wearing shoes that have thrown off your gait all these years?
my podiatrist said that i was “poorly designed”!
(footwise) my arches are totally collapsed and i have also been told i need a tendon transfer to rebuild the arches. do you think wearing the five fingers could possibly help rebuild my arches?
It depends. If it were me I would at least try to see if it helps. That is a very mechanistic and heretical way of thinking for a physician to say you are poorly designed. I have a bit of a different philosophy that “you are fearfully and wonderfully made” – Psalm 139:14
Vibrams Rock! I’ve been running in them for a few months and they are considerably better than traditional running shoes. I’m currently training for the Nashville Marathon and I plan to run the full 26.2 miles in my FiveFingers. Thanks for the video Dr. Axe! Barefoot is awesome.
My husband has been wanting a pair of Five Fingers for about three years now! Thanks for the video, maybe he will get a pair for Christmas this year. ;)
Couldn’t agree more, Dr. Josh! I’m wearing my vibram five fingers for everything and they make a huge difference! They are especially good for hiking, trail running, and climbing. However I will wear mine to even clean the kitchen :P
Where can I find these vibrams????? (in Nashille)
thanks-
Try Cumberland Transit(West End)
My daughter’s feet are pronated. She went to physical therapy about a year & 1/2 ago & they told us she should be wearing shoes w/ good arch support to help correct the alignment. Do you think it’s better in her case to be barefoot more often & that her pronation will correct itself over time?
Hey Michelle – The majority of the time when kids have these problems they will correct themselves. So I would encourage her to walk around barefoot. Also, taking your hands and increasing the motion in the bones of her feet will also help. A chiropractor or massage therapist could do this or you could have one of them show you how. I hope you and Clay are doing great :)
